The story of the Kandler Vineyards began 30 years ago when our Franco-German family decided to purchase lost lands in the Minervois hinterland in Roubia, between land and sea, between the medieval city of Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi. Château Tourril takes its name from the "Pierre du Tourril," an ancient Gallo-Roman signal tower that has overlooked this garrigue setting for 2000 years. The second generation took over in 2014 to expand the estate, convert it to certified organic farming, and develop its reputation and export sales. Driven by his passion for wines from southern France, Stephan Kandler met Bertrand Hardy, from another winemaking family in the Rhône Valley, to produce their first joint organic vintage in 2016 on his terroir at Domaine des Pentelines, near Avignon. After three joint vintages, Bertrand transferred to Stephan the organic gem of 24 hectares in AOP Côtes du Rhône Villages Gadagne, whose pebble terroir is identical to that of Châteauneuf du Pape. The uniqueness of these two terroirs and appellations is marked by history and the climate of southern France, particularly the influence of the Mediterranean Sea. To this geographical link, we add our expertise in common grape varieties, allowing each terroir to express a unique personality.
