Seals and sealing materials have been around for millennia and are indispensable in modern times as well. On the contrary, the continuously advancing development is also increasing the demands on seals. These requirements include not only durability but also criteria regarding the absence of harmful substances (see previous asbestos sealing materials or the currently restricted processing of ceramic fibers). Particularly in the area of drinking water and food in general, the regulations are becoming increasingly stringent. Additionally, the miniaturization of components also impacts sealing technology (see also the article "Filigrane Dichtungen - unverzichtbare C-Teile"). By Stephan Eifler – Theodor Winkel GmbH Seals can be found everywhere. No engine, no hydraulic system, hardly any pipeline can do without them. They must withstand extremely low or very high temperatures. High vacuum or extreme pressure must not destroy them. Chemicals, whether aggressive, acidic, or basic, must not attack them. Even radioactive exposure must be endured by some representatives of the species "Dichtung" over long periods. The variety of sealing materials is increasing more and more, and thus our inventory as well. We now stock about 200 different sealing materials from various manufacturers, from which we can produce your seal. The sealing materials differ in the selection of raw materials, manufacturers, design, durability, etc.... as well as in the combination with various fibers, the fiber structure, or the length of the fibers, as well as in the formulation of the elastomer binders. The diversity is further multiplied by various "finishes" such as coatings made of, for example, graphite or PTFE, inserts, markings, flanging, casings, composites with other materials, etc. It becomes even more extensive when considering the various thicknesses. We stock the most common thicknesses of our products, which range from 0.25 mm to 50 mm, and sometimes even in different sheet/roll dimensions. ​From this extensive range of materials, we offer our customers an almost endless array of combinations to select the right sealing material. But not only the choice of material is important; the choice of manufacturing methods also influences the result, as each piece of technology requires a uniquely defined shape for the seal. Of course, there are standardized mass products. However, especially in machine and plant engineering, there is a need for individual seals that must be manufactured precisely according to the definitions of the designer or plant builder, either individually or in small quantities.
