Founded in the 1960s, COSMA is based in the province of Cremona, an area located in northern Italy characterized by particularly flourishing and intensive agriculture. From the very beginning, COSMA chose to operate in a highly selective and specialized sector, which initially seemed to attract little interest, at a time when the world appeared largely unaware of the looming environmental issues that would soon become very concerning, taking on very serious tones within a few decades. The combination of various factors such as the rapid industrialization that occurred in the post-war period both in Europe and elsewhere, the establishment of numerous large-scale chemical complexes, the continuous and intensive use of fertilizers, the rapid development of plastics used for everyday items, as well as the use of chemicals and synthetic derivatives in mass-consumed products, has intensified the gradual damage to the environment, attacking not only land surfaces but especially water resources.
