Many people equate the terms railing and handrail, but there is actually a distinction: Handrail: A handrail refers solely to the gripping part of the railing. This includes the part of the railing where holding on with the hand is intended or where the hand is guided while ascending or descending the stairs. Railing: In contrast to the handrail, the term railing not only describes the handrail but also the complete side covering. Therefore, a railing also includes the part where no hand is guided along. A handrail is useful, for example, when a staircase runs along a wall. A railing is not necessary here because the side covering is already provided by the existing wall.
