In 1899, Jakob Weigel was registered in the Höchst Trade Register as a "box maker for the production of boxes made of wood or cardboard". The company was founded in 1909 by Jakob Weigel and Michael Weigel. They built a generously sized production hall for that time at the current location of the company. The brothers also integrated a sawmill with a crate factory into the production of matchboxes. For over five decades, this product range was continued and expanded almost unchanged until the end of the 1960s by the successors of the founders, the sons-in-law Hermann Stratenwerth and Heinrich Hofferberth. In 1970, long-time employee and timber merchant Karl Reeg took over the management. Significant structural changes were underway at that time; the mass wooden crate was ultimately replaced by cardboard. Therefore, it was also necessary to quickly expand the production of stackable and storage pallets, which had already begun in the mid-1950s. By 1977, a modern, fully mechanized sawmill was already in operation. Despite the general stagnation, Gebrüder Weigel managed to continuously expand. In 1989, a second location was established in Höchst, ideally suited for the partial relocation of production and administration. On March 31, 1989, Karl Reeg celebrated his 50th anniversary with the company. After Karl Reeg's retirement in February 1992, a new, motivated team took over the management. With managing director Lutz Arnold, a family member of the Weigels returned to the company. He made the first contacts to Poland and the then Czechoslovakia as early as the early 1990s. Meanwhile, the company has expanded its supplier network to China, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. Since 1994, extensive structural changes have taken place. Factory halls were gradually demolished and replaced with modern production buildings that provided enough space for modern machines and enabled more efficient workflows. The sawmill was also modernized. A fully automated production line for standard pallets completed the investment program. Today, Gebrüder Weigel presents itself as a modern company in the wood industry, managed in the 3rd generation with 40 employees. The company history stands for continuity, flexibility, sustainability, and connection to the region. From "box makers", they have become packaging specialists who offer tailored solutions for the products of every customer. The machinery for further processing is constantly being updated to the latest technical standards.
