Extraction Blähschiefer is an industrially produced lightweight aggregate derived from natural roofing slate from the nearby quarry Raumland Böhl. The Wittgensteiner roofing slate is geologically classified as part of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge and was formed approximately 380 million years ago. It is a raw material that contains organic components as sedimentary rock and is very similar in composition to clay. This is one of the reasons why it is also referred to as clay slate. Originally, spoil heaps from roofing slate production served as raw material for the production of Blähschiefer. Processing The temperature-induced increase in pressure within the grain leads to the escape of air and organic components. The slate expands and forms a porous structure inside, with closed pores. The surface consists of a sintered, dense, and solid shell. Berwilit - Blähschiefer is used not only as a lightweight concrete aggregate but also as an aggregate for fire-resistant lightweight concretes up to 1100°C. Other applications include fillings for sound and thermal insulation and the installation of screed panels.
